Text Messaging
You can text your Townie from the messages app you already use on your phone — iPhone or Android — and from Messages on a Mac. You text Town’s texting number, and once you’ve verified your phone, messages you send to it are routed to your Townie (and its replies come back from that same number). It works however your phone happens to send: iMessage, RCS, or plain SMS.
How to connect
- Open your Integrations page and find the Text Messaging card.
- Choose Connect. Town shows you a prompt with a pre-filled verification text:
- On your phone, tap the link to open Messages with the number and code already filled in — just hit send.
- On a computer, scan the QR code with your phone’s camera; it opens the same pre-filled text for you to send.
- Send the text. Once Town receives it, your number is verified and the card flips to connected — that’s it.
Connecting happens from your phone (or by scanning the QR with your phone). You don’t need the Town macOS desktop app to set this up.
To use a different number later, disconnect from the Text Messaging card and verify the new one the same way.
What it’s good for
- Fire off a quick request — “what’s on my calendar tomorrow?”, “remind me to call the vet Thursday.”
- Capture a thought hands-free while you’re away from the app.
- Keep the conversation going in a thread you already have open all day.
Like the other messaging channels, texting is best for asking your Townie things. For proactive briefings and notifications, use email or the iOS app — see Messaging Channels & Their Limits.
Good to know
- It’s the same Townie. A conversation you have by text shares the same memory and context as the web app and iOS.
- Photos and voice notes work on most connections. Send a picture and your Townie can look at it; send a voice memo and it’s transcribed and handled like a typed message. Not every texting connection supports attachments yet, and some types — videos, contact cards — aren’t supported at all; when your Townie can’t view something, it says so rather than leave you without a reply.
- Long replies split on plain SMS. On iMessage and RCS a long reply arrives as one message; on plain SMS it’s broken into several, sent a couple of seconds apart.
- One number at a time. Your Townie is bound to the phone number you verified. To switch, disconnect and verify the new number.
