Recordings
Recordings let you capture a conversation or a spoken thought and have your assistant turn it into a transcript — automatically, and with full context for everything else it does for you.
Hit record during a meeting, a call, or a quick voice memo. Town captures the audio, transcribes it, gives it a title, and files it in your Content library. From there, your assistant can search it, summarize it, pull out action items, and use it the same way it uses your email and calendar.
If you’ve used a meeting-notes tool like Granola, Recordings covers the same ground — capture a conversation, get a clean transcript and notes — except it lives right inside Town. So instead of a transcript sitting in a separate app, it becomes context your assistant already has.
What is a recording?
A recording is any audio you capture in Town — and there’s more than one kind:
- Meetings — a call or in-person conversation you want transcribed and summarized.
- Voice memos and requests — talk to your assistant instead of typing. “Remind me to follow up with the vendor Thursday,” or “draft a recap of the call I just had.”
- Notes — a spoken thought you want captured and kept.
You don’t have to label any of this. Town reads the recording, figures out what kind it is (Meeting, Request, or Note), and gives it a clear title automatically.
Start a recording from your home screen
The fastest way in is the new button on your home screen — click Recording and Town starts capturing right away.
- On the web app, a recorder opens and you’ll see the transcript appear live as you speak. You can pause and resume, and stop when you’re done.
- On the Mac and iOS apps, recording uses your device natively, so you can capture on the go.
When you stop, Town uploads the audio and transcribes it in the background — you don’t have to wait around. The recording shows as transcribing, then turns into a finished transcript a moment later.
Where your recordings live
Every recording lands in your Content library, under Recordings.
Each one shows its title, how long it was, what kind it is (Meeting, Request, or Note), and when you recorded it. Open one to read the full transcript. The library is the home base for everything you’ve captured — searchable and in one place, so a call from three weeks ago is as easy to pull up as this morning’s.
Your assistant has full context for every recording
This is what makes Recordings more than a transcription tool. Your assistant can reach all of your recordings, not just the one in front of you.
- Ask about anything you’ve recorded — “what did I commit to in yesterday’s team meeting?” or “find the call where we discussed pricing.”
- Turn a call into work — “draft the follow-up email from my last client call,” or “create tasks from the action items in this meeting.”
- Summarize without re-listening — get a tight summary of a long conversation in seconds.
- Connect it to everything else — your assistant pairs a recording’s transcript with your email, calendar, and contacts, so a follow-up already knows who was on the call and what’s next.
Because it’s the same assistant with the same memory everywhere, you can capture a recording in one place and ask about it from another — the web app, the Mac app, Slack, or email.
Meeting notes
When a recording is a meeting, Town can go a step further and generate meeting notes — a clean write-up of what was discussed and what to do next — saved as a document you can read, edit, and share. Your assistant can reference those notes later just like the transcript.
Recording states
A recording moves through a few states after you stop:
- Transcribing — Town is turning the audio into text.
- Ready — the transcript (and title) are done and available to you and your assistant.
- Failed — something went wrong with transcription. Try recording again; if it keeps happening, reach out.
Good to know
- It’s private to you. Recordings are tied to your account. You can share an individual recording with a link when you want to, but they aren’t shared by default.
- Long recordings are supported — capture a full meeting, not just a quick clip.
- Capture on any device. Start from the web app at your desk or the Mac and iOS apps when you’re away from it; everything flows into the same library.
- You’re in control. Delete any recording you don’t want to keep.
