Billing & Usage
Town measures the work your Townie does in credits. The more it reads, reasons, and acts, the more credits a task or routine uses. Each plan includes a monthly batch of credits, and you can keep going past them at your plan’s pay-as-you-go rate. This page answers the most common questions about credits, sessions, and routines.
Looking for the basics — where to see your credits, what the alerts mean, what happens at zero, and how promo/overage work? See Credits & Usage. For the plan lineup, see Plans & Pricing.
How can I optimize my credit usage?
A few ways to get the most out of your credits:
- Right-size your routines. Routines that run often (every incoming email, every few minutes) use more than ones that run once a day. Narrow a routine’s trigger and scope so it only runs when it actually needs to.
- Turn off routines you’re not using. If a routine isn’t earning its keep, switch it off — there’s no penalty, and you can turn it back on anytime.
- Set a monthly spend cap. You can set a hard limit on overage spend, with a live tally so you always see where you stand.
- Watch your usage and upgrade if you’re consistently over. Each higher plan includes more credits at a lower per-credit rate — so steady overage is usually your signal to move up rather than pay overage.
What is a chat session?
A chat session is a single conversation thread with your Townie — like a thread in a messaging app.
- Everything in one session shares context, so your Townie remembers what you’ve already said and you can build on it without repeating yourself.
- You can start a new session anytime for a fresh topic, or reopen an existing one to pick up where you left off.
- One thing to know: your permission settings reset when you start a new session, so any extra autonomy you granted doesn’t silently carry over.
- Your durable preferences and memories aren’t tied to a single session — those carry across all of them, everywhere you reach your Townie.
Rule of thumb: keep related back-and-forth in the same session; start a new one when you switch to something unrelated.
What is a stock routine vs a custom routine?
Both are routines (things your Townie does automatically). The difference is who built the starting point.
Stock routines are ready-made by Town for the most common needs — things like your morning briefing, auto-inbox triage, auto-drafts, and meeting briefings.
- Turn one on with a click; no setup required.
- Even though everyone starts from the same template, yours is personalized by your settings — your labels, your schedule, your focus areas, your writing style.
Custom routines are ones you create yourself for how you work.
- Just describe what you want in plain language and your Townie builds it — the trigger, the steps, and the tools it needs.
- Use these when no stock routine quite fits, or when you want something specific to your workflow.
Which to use? Start with a stock routine to get value immediately, then build custom ones as you find patterns unique to you. (Heads up: some plans cap how many custom routines you can have.)
