Canva

Connect Canva and your assistant can work your designs — find and read them, pull the comment threads, generate and edit designs, and export finished files — so promo graphics, social posts, and deck updates happen from a chat message instead of a blank canvas.

Everything runs as the connected Canva account: your assistant sees exactly the designs, folders, and templates that account can see, and every change it proposes — a new design, an edit, an export, a comment — asks for your approval before it happens.

What’s included

With Canva connected, your assistant can:

  • Search and read designs — find designs by keyword, read their pages, text content, and presenter notes
  • Browse folders and assets — list folder contents, search folders, and look up uploaded media
  • Read comments — pull a design’s comment threads and replies
  • Generate designs with Canva AI (with approval) — describe what you want and review the candidates
  • Create and edit designs (with approval) — copy an existing design, import a file as a new design, or edit text and elements in place
  • Add your photos and files (with approval) — send a photo in chat or by text and have it uploaded to your Canva media library
  • Resize and export (with approval) — resize a design for another format, export finished designs as files
  • Comment and reply (with approval) — leave feedback on a design or answer a teammate’s comment

Connecting Canva

  1. Go to Integrations
  2. Find Canva and click Connect
  3. Sign in to Canva and authorize Town when prompted
  4. Return to Town

Town connects through Canva’s official MCP server (mcp.canva.com) using Canva’s sign-in — no API keys or setup. Your assistant is limited to what the connected Canva account can already see and do, and you can revoke access anytime from Canva’s Connected apps settings.

The Canva popup shows which Canva account you’re connecting, with a “Switch accounts” option — check it before allowing access, especially if you’re signed in to both a personal and a work account.

Connecting more than one Canva account

If you work across several Canva accounts — a personal account and a team account, or one per client — you can connect each one as its own labeled connection. Click Connect another account on the Canva integration, give the new connection a clear label (“Personal”, “Acme team”), and use Canva’s account chooser in the popup to sign in to the right one.

One Canva login per connection. Canva only keeps one active authorization per account, so signing in with the same Canva account for a second connection (personal or team) disconnects the older one. Each connection needs its own Canva login.

When you ask for something afterward, name the account the way you labeled it (“in my Acme team account, find the launch deck”). If it’s ambiguous which account you mean, your assistant asks instead of guessing.

The label is how you and your assistant tell accounts apart, so make it match the account you actually connected — the popup’s account name is the place to double-check before you allow access.

Connecting Canva for your team

A team admin can connect Canva to the whole team instead: every member’s assistant can then use the same connection, and it shows up alongside personal accounts in the account picker.

A team connection acts as one Canva account for everyone — designs created, edits made, and comments posted by any member show up in Canva as that account, and its Canva AI credits are shared. Every change still asks the requesting member for approval first.

Use a dedicated Canva account for team connections — a shared brand or marketing account, not someone’s personal login. Everything the connected account can see in Canva becomes available to the whole team — and since Canva keeps only one active authorization per account, reusing a login that already backs another connection disconnects that older one.

Every capability that changes anything in Canva asks for your approval first — including in routines that otherwise run on their own. Nothing is generated, edited, exported, or posted automatically.

Adding your photos to a design

The fastest way to get an image into Canva: send it to your assistant — attach it in chat, or text it if you’ve set up text messaging — and say where it goes (“add this to the June newsletter design”). Your assistant creates a temporary secure link for the file (it expires after about 15 minutes and only works for that one file), asks your approval, and uploads it to your Canva media library, ready to place in the design.

Canva’s AI generation doesn’t reproduce your photo. “Generate a design” invents new artwork from a description — even when your image is provided alongside. To use your actual photo, have it uploaded to your media library and placed into a design, not fed to design generation.

Use cases

Design production from your other work

Turn what’s already in Town into artwork:

  • “Turn Thursday’s webinar invite into a promo graphic”
  • Copy last month’s event design and swap in the new date, speaker, and title
  • Import a one-pager as a Canva design your team can restyle

Feedback without opening Canva

Stay on top of design reviews from chat:

  • “What did the team say on the launch deck design?”
  • Get comment threads summarized, with replies drafted for your approval
  • Check whether a design changed since you last looked

Finished files on demand

  • Export the approved design and send it wherever it’s needed
  • Pull presenter notes out of a deck design before you rehearse
  • Resize the Instagram post for LinkedIn (Canva Pro or higher)

Example routine

A routine that keeps event promotion moving:

Every Monday at 9am: 1. Check my calendar for events and webinars in the next two weeks 2. Find the matching promo design in Canva, or copy the promo template 3. Update the title, date, and speaker — hold every edit for my approval 4. Email me a summary with what's ready to export

Best practices

Approvals are the point. Edits, exports, uploads, and comments change what your team and collaborators see. Review each approval card — comments especially, since they’re visible to everyone on the design.

Name the design. Canva accounts get big. “The Q3 pricing one-pager in the Marketing folder” gets a better result than “the pricing design”.

Treat AI generation as a starting point. Canva AI proposes candidates from your description; review the options and iterate rather than expecting a finished design in one pass.

Troubleshooting

Can’t connect, or connected the wrong account

  • The Canva popup names the account it’s connecting and offers “Switch accounts” — use it if the wrong account is shown
  • If you connected the wrong account, disconnect it in Town and reconnect, choosing the right account in the popup

A design or template doesn’t show up

  • Verify the connected Canva account has access to it — access follows that account exactly
  • Brand templates and brand kits only appear for Canva Enterprise accounts

A feature says it isn’t available

  • Design resizing needs Canva Pro or higher; brand templates, brand kits, and template autofill need Canva Enterprise
  • What Canva offers the connection follows the connected account’s plan

An uploaded photo didn’t arrive

  • Approve both steps in Town: the temporary link, then the Canva upload
  • The temporary link expires after about 15 minutes — if it lapsed, just ask again and a fresh one is created

The generated design doesn’t match my photo

  • That’s how Canva’s AI generation works: it invents artwork from a description rather than reproducing an image. Have your photo uploaded and placed into a design instead
