Slack integration FAQ
Town's Slack integration adds the Town app to your workspace through Slack's official sign-in — one click, no API keys. Your Townie can read the channels @Town is invited to, post updates, send you DMs, and reply in-thread when you mention @Town. An optional Slack Persona connection adds your personal access: searching your messages, reading your DMs, and sending as you, with your approval.
Town only reads Slack when you (or a routine you configured) ask for it, and the bot only sees channels it's been invited to. Anything Town posts that others can see — channel messages, replies sent as you — waits for your approval. Read more about how Town approaches security.
By default, no. Messages other people can see are held for your approval, and the bot posts under its own @Town name, never yours. Sending a message as you requires the optional Persona connection and your explicit approval on each send. DMs to you — your flags and briefs — come straight to you.
The channels @Town is invited to. Under the hood these are Town's Slack tools: list channels and users; get channel messages, threads, and reactions; send channel messages and DMs; and upload files. The optional Persona connection adds your side of Slack: search messages, read your DMs, react, and send as you.
You need a Slack workspace where you can add apps — some workspaces require an admin to approve new apps, so ask yours if the install is blocked — and a Town account, free to start. The Slack connection works on every Slack and Town plan.
The bot is the default: it posts under the @Town name and works in the shared channels it's invited to — best when a message should come from a team tool. Persona is optional and personal: it works through your own Slack access — your DMs, private channels, and search — and can send as you, with each message approved by you first. Use either or both.
What is Slack?
Slack is where work conversations live — the channels, threads, and DMs that carry your team's decisions, requests, and escalations all day long.
Slack carries the conversation; Town does something about it. Connected, the messages that need you get flagged, the updates you owe get drafted, and the answers land back in the channel where everyone is already looking.
