PostHog integration FAQ
Town's PostHog integration is a secure connection to your PostHog project through Town's PostHog tools. Your Townie can read your insights, run analytics queries over your event data, and look up persons, cohorts, and surveys, then turn them into funnel reports, launch readouts, and plain-English answers. You authorize it from Town's Integrations page with a personal API key from PostHog; nothing to install.
Town only reads PostHog data when you (or a routine you configured) ask for it, and access is scoped to what your API key allows. Anything Town drafts or writes from it waits for your approval. Read more about how Town approaches security.
Day to day the connection reads: insights, query results, persons, cohorts, and surveys. It can also create or update saved insights when you ask, and like every action that touches a system your team depends on, those changes are held for your approval first.
Your saved insights, your event data through analytics queries (HogQL), and your persons, cohorts, and surveys, read on demand. Under the hood these are Town's PostHog tools: list and get project insights, create a query, get persons, get cohorts, get surveys, and create or update an insight. Feature flags, session recordings, and dashboards aren't covered yet.
You need a PostHog account — personal API keys are available on every PostHog tier, including the free plan — and a Town account, free to start. The PostHog connection works on every Town plan.
PostHog's AI answers questions inside PostHog. Town brings your product data to the rest of your work — usage lands in your meeting briefs, launch numbers reach the team, and anyone can ask what users are doing without opening a dashboard.
What is PostHog?
PostHog is the open-source product analytics platform engineering-led teams build on — event tracking, funnels, retention, session replay, feature flags, and surveys in one place, tied to every user and account.
PostHog captures what users do; Town puts it to work. Connected, funnel drops find you, launch numbers report themselves, and a plain question becomes a real analytics query.
