How to connect GitHub to Town

  1. Open Integrations in Town

Go to Integrations in your Town workspace (free to create) and find GitHub.

  2. Sign in with GitHub

Authorize when prompted — one click through GitHub's official sign-in. Nothing to install or configure.

  3. Put your repos to work

Done — ask about any repo, get the update on what shipped, or say what to change and your Townie opens the pull request and tracks the checks.

Read the GitHub connection docs

Just ask your Townie

GitHub holds the work. Town opens it up — answers, updates, and PRs anyone can ship.

  • “Update the docs to say 14 days.”

A branch, a commit, and a PR opened, with checks tracked live.

  • “Where do we handle refunds?”

Answered from code search, files, and pull requests, in plain English.

  • “Catch marketing up on what shipped this week.”

A Slack update or email, minus the jargon.

GitHub integration FAQ

Town's GitHub integration connects your repos through GitHub's official sign-in — one click, no setup. Your Townie can read repos, issues, pull requests, and commits, search your code, and — with your approval — create branches, commit changes, and open pull requests, with a live card tracking the checks.

Town only touches GitHub when you (or a routine you configured) ask for it, and access is scoped to what your GitHub account can see. Nothing is written to your repos without your approval. Read more about how Town approaches security.

By default, no — branches, commits, and pull requests are held for your approval, and changes ship as pull requests, so your team's normal review still applies. You watch the checks run on a live PR card and merge when it's green.

The repos your account can see. Under the hood these are Town's GitHub tools: list and read repos, issues, pull requests, commits, and diffs; search code and read files; and, with approval, create branches, commit files, open and update pull requests, and file issues.

You need a GitHub account, and a Town account — free to start. The GitHub connection works on every Town plan.

Copilot writes code in your editor. Town works around the code — answering repo questions for the whole company, drafting the updates you owe, and letting anyone ship a docs fix as a reviewed pull request without opening an editor.

What is GitHub?

GitHub is where software gets built — the system of record for your team's code, issues, pull requests, and everything that ships.

GitHub holds the work; Town opens it up. Connected, anyone can ask what's happening, updates draft themselves, and a plain-English request becomes a reviewed pull request with its checks tracked live.
